Read full description of the books Rennie Goes Riding:This is a career novel about a girl who, without good school results, decides to work in a local riding stable. She has had health problems and doesn't need to be under too much pressure.
Training horses, dealing with pupils and meeting the other staff are all great learning experiences. Rennie learns the right way to do things and how to cope with her life. A young man riding at the stable becomes keen on her however and she doesn't think he is right for her. So rather than cause a fuss she accepts a chance of another job further away where she will have to live in, with a horse dealer.
While the dealer is not a problem personally, Rennie discovers that he uses unscrupulous methods to sell horses and a girl gets killed by a hot-tempered horse that he'd sold while drugging it to be quiet. Rennie can't work there anymore - nowadays the man would be prosecuted but we don't hear about that. So Rennie finds work where she is better placed and happy.
Horse tales always straddle a border between love of the horses and horsey life, and the offputting nature of some of the work and people involved. This is a great read and may help young people to make up their minds whether they want to work with horses or just to enjoy them.
A simpler tale for younger readers is 'Pony Jobs for Jill' by Ruby Ferguson.
A complex career tale for teens is a trilogy: 'Eventer's Dream/ A Hoof in the Door / Ticket to Ride' by Caroline Akrill about a better-qualified girl taking charge of a run-down stable and giving lessons while wishing for an eventing horse.
Read information about the authorBritish children's and young adult writer.
Edwards spent spent much of her childhood at Rye Harbour in East Sussex, encountering the fishermen and rural characters that later appear in her "Romney Marsh" series of books. In 1933 she married Bill Edwards and began publishing articles and verses in a variety of publications. She spent eight years as editor of a Correspondence magazine for parents before the publication of her first book Wish for a Pony in 1947.
In 1947 the Edwards family moved to Punch Bowl Farm in Thursley, South West Surrey, which became the setting for her other main series of books (as Punchbowl Farm).
Monica Edwards differed from many of her contemporaries - notably Enid Blyton - in that her characters grew older with the books until they reached the edge of adulthood, and the atmosphere of the books changed with the times.
In 1968, Edwards' husband, until then working Punch Bowl Farm, was seriously disabled in a tractor accident. Monica Edwards stopped writing fiction at that time. By the end of 1970, the Edwards had left Punch Bowl Farm.
