Read full description of the books Captain America vs. The Red Skull:This collection is a really on the mixed bag of tales featuring Cap facing off against his most iconic foe, the Red Skull. I am sure this got pushed out for the recent film, but this is not a great primer on the never ending battle against the embodiment of fascism. There are a handful of interesting tales; I thought the Cap & Falcon issue that dealt with the black power movement is wildly entertaining (dig that jive dialog! afros!), and had an excellent (if predicable) twist. Less successful where the Kirby entries, including the Cosmic Cube epic, which had awesome art, but a pretty lousy story (basically the way you defeat infinite power is one really sweet body tackle). The very first story has the Red Skull's first tale which is super confusing for new readers, since the Red Skull turns out to be some random dude.
The rest of the tales are again mixed; the Red Skull fighting SHEILD was fun in a visual sense, but really fizzled out in its finale. Also disappointing was the 'Death of a Dream' three parter, which had a few interesting ideas (basically killing Cap's image through the media), but really failed to set good stakes or an interesting heavy, pretty Mike Zeck art though. I was surprised that one of the 90's tales was pretty interesting (Return to Skull House), despite having to overcome the artwork and a pretty terrible sidekick for Cap. I enjoyed reading these tales, but I can't say I would ever recommend this for non-Captain America fans.
