Read full description of the books Strange Girl, Volume 4: Golden Lights:Normally I try to avoid the whole criticism angle of slamming one work by comparing it to something better, but it's hard not hold this against something like 'Preacher' (mainly cause I've read both series simultaneously). Both have common ground in that they use storytelling as a backdrop to call into question things like God and religion, set against a theologically driven fantasy setting.
However, whereas Garth Ennis could successfully weave his take on theology into a sound narrative, Rick Remender's 'Strange Girl' is more akin to some 14-year-old atheist angrily taking up satanism to spite his parents. The near-constant proselytizing, with only occasional spurts of actual story, is made all the more trite by being composed of tired, grade-school level arguments that the writer feels the need to constantly back-pat himself for thinking to be much more profound then it actual is.
Not even the art throughout this series has provided much solace, ranging from ugly, busy, boring, or otherwise unmemorable.
Frankly you'd get the same narrative stimulation from reading some teenager's blog. Stick with better atheist fables like Preacher.
